Benjamin Whitbeck Woodworking I've gone through a few different styles of woodworking, from rough stick tables to craftsman mirror frames.
My woodworking and design skills have grown to include many unique and useful wood furnishings. My main focus (and favorite work) is creating lamps entirely from wood.
While flipping through a magazine, I saw a wooden Frank Loyd Wright lamp that was designed to let some light shine through wooden panels. It seemed to me that I could find a way to make the wooden shades truly glow and display their natural beauty. After some thought I had a rough idea of a lamp with wooden shades so thin, the light radiates through. By illuminating the woodgrain, we are able to see a rarely seen view of a somewhat ordinary piece of wood.
Six years later, I have created many different styles and sizes of lamps. I like all my work to showoff the natural beauty of the wood itself, so I don't use stains, veneers, or high gloss finishes. The type of wood I use depends on many things, from visual appeal to structural necessity. I most enjoy when I have the opportunity to cut and dry wood myself and can watch the progress from felled tree to finished piece.
